For about a century, buying a light bulb meant picking a wattage. Then LEDs arrived, federal efficiency standards tightened, and suddenly the bulb aisle had lumens, Kelvins, CRI ratings, and four competing technologies.
Here's a straight comparison of all four — and where each one still makes sense.

LED: The Default Answer
LEDs (light-emitting diodes) produce light by passing current through a semiconductor rather than heating a filament. That single difference is why they win on nearly every measure — no energy wasted as heat means an LED delivers the same brightness on roughly a fifth of the power.
Where LEDs genuinely excel:
• Longevity. A 25,000-hour LED run three hours a day lasts over 20 years. For fixtures in stairwells, vaulted ceilings, or anywhere you need a ladder, that alone justifies the switch.
• Heat. This matters more in Arizona than most places. Every incandescent bulb in your house is a small space heater your AC has to fight. LEDs run cool enough to touch.
• Durability. No filament to break, so they handle vibration well — the reason they're standard in ceiling fan light kits now.
• Control. LEDs are the only technology that supports color-tunable and app-controlled fixtures.
The honest drawbacks:
• Dimming is fussy. An LED must be explicitly rated dimmable, and it needs a dimmer designed for LED loads. Pairing an LED with a 20-year-old incandescent dimmer causes buzzing, flicker, and a dead zone at the bottom of the dial. If you're switching a whole room to LED, budget for new dimmers too.
• Quality varies enormously. Cheap LEDs cut corners on drivers and phosphors. Look for a CRI of 90+ if color accuracy matters — in kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere you're looking at fabric, paint, food, or your own face.
• Integrated fixtures aren't bulb-swappable. Many modern fixtures have the LED built in. Good ones last decades; it just means you commit to that color temperature up front.
Incandescent: Mostly Historical Now
The classic filament bulb has beautiful light — a perfect 100 CRI and a warm glow that dims to a candle-like amber. It also converts about 90% of its energy into heat.
In August 2023 the U.S. Department of Energy began enforcing a minimum efficiency standard of 45 lumens per watt for general service lamps, which standard incandescents can't come close to meeting. They've been phased out of retail as a result.
Where you'll still find them: specialty and exempted categories — appliance bulbs, oven lights, some decorative filament shapes, three-way bulbs, plant lights, and bug lights.
If you love the look of a visible filament, the good news is that filament-style LEDs now replicate it convincingly, with the same exposed-spiral aesthetic at a fraction of the energy. They're the standard choice for open-bulb Edison fixtures, farmhouse pendants, and vanity strips.
Halogen: A Better Incandescent, Same Problem
Halogen bulbs are incandescents with a halogen gas fill that lets the filament run hotter and recycle evaporated tungsten back onto itself. The result is crisper, whiter light, roughly double the life, and about 30% better efficiency than a standard incandescent.
They're also genuinely hot — hot enough to be a burn and fire consideration — and they've been swept up in the same efficiency standards.
Where halogen still has a real argument: precision beam control. Halogen MR16 and PAR lamps produce a tight, clean beam that's excellent for accent lighting on artwork, sculpture, and retail display. LED equivalents have largely caught up, but if you have existing low-voltage track or landscape fixtures on a magnetic transformer, halogen may still be the compatible choice.
CFL: Skip It
Compact fluorescents were the bridge technology between incandescent and LED, and they've been left behind. They contain a small amount of mercury (requiring special disposal), take time to reach full brightness, dim poorly if at all, don't like frequent switching, and lose lifespan in enclosed fixtures. LEDs beat them on every metric at a comparable price.
If you still have CFLs in your house, there's no urgency to rip them out — but replace them with LEDs as they fail, and recycle rather than trash them.
How to Shop by Lumens Instead of Watts
The single most useful habit to build: stop shopping by watts. Watts measure energy consumed; lumens measure light produced. Here's the translation from the old incandescent wattages:

Then check two more numbers on the package:
• Color temperature (Kelvin). 2700K is warm and yellow like an incandescent. 3000K is a soft white. 4000K is neutral. 5000K is daylight and reads blue-white. For living spaces and bedrooms, stay at 2700K–3000K. Whatever you pick, keep it consistent within a room — mismatched Kelvin in one space is the most common and most noticeable lighting mistake in a home.
• CRI (Color Rendering Index). How faithfully the bulb renders color, on a 100-point scale. 80+ is acceptable, 90+ is what you want in kitchens, baths, closets, and dining rooms.
The Bottom Line
Buy LED, in almost every case. Pick your lumens instead of your watts, choose 2700K–3000K for living spaces, look for CRI 90+ where color matters, and confirm both the bulb and the dimmer are rated for dimming before you install.
Keep halogen only for existing low-voltage accent applications where you can't easily convert the transformer. Let your remaining incandescents and CFLs age out naturally.
