Accessorize Your Room Like You Would Your Outfit

Home Decor Product

Accessories can mean the difference between a room looking complete and a room looking forgotten. Although accessories are often put on the back burner and are not top-of-mind, they are the missing link in completing your room and bringing cohesion to the rest of your home.

There are many ways to approach interior decorating, but one of our favorite ways is to view your room as you would an outfit. In this metaphor, the accessories in your room such as a lamp, mirror, rug, or candle would be equivalent to the accessories in an outfit, such as a pair of earrings, pair of shoes, bracelet or a decorative scarf.

If you take away the shoes and scarf, your outfit is going to look unfinished and un-put together. Similarly, if your room is lacking lighting and wall art, it will also look unfinished and un-put together.

Quickly Change the Look:
What do you do when you want to take your look from day to night? Simply swap out those black flats and pearl earrings for a pair of red pumps and dramatic gold earrings. While you won’t be changing the look of your space from day to night, you may want to change it from season to season. Take your pale blue pillows, white table lamp and floral wall art and swap them out for red pillows, a glass table lamp and a modern mirror. By changing out a few basic accessories that every room should have, you can take your space in an entirely different direction.

Remember this metaphor next time you are decorating a space in your home. You don’t wear the same colors and types of clothes in the winter as you do in the summer, so why should your home be decorated with the same accessories during those very different seasons? The quick answer is they shouldn’t, and by swapping out a few accessories here and there and replacing them with new pieces in different colors, patterns and textures, your space will look fresh and updated.

Why Do Bathrooms Require So Much Light?

Bathroom Fixtures

When it comes to deciding which rooms need lighting in your home, bathrooms may not be first on the list. However, they tend to require more strategic lighting than you would typically think of for such a small room. Why is this?

Bathrooms require so much light because they:
• Are small and dark
• Often lack windows and/or doorways to let in natural light
• Are used for many different purposes.

Often times, the smaller the room, the harder it is to light. Small bathrooms regularly lack windows or wide doorways that would otherwise let in natural light. Aside from their small size and cave-like characteristics, bathrooms are also used for many different purposes, which make them difficult, yet extremely important to light properly.

Bathrooms are used for getting ready in the morning, doing ones hair, getting dressed and applying makeup. You may be able to get away with minimal lighting some of those tasks every once in awhile, but when it comes to applying makeup, lighting is vital.

Vanity lighting and wall sconces are two of the most common types of lighting fixtures for a bathroom. Lighting is all about layers, and the bathroom is no different. Start with vanity lighting or wall sconces to bring in light at eye level. Next, you’ll want to add overhead lighting to light up the room as a whole. You can do this with recessed lighting, track lighting, or a chandelier. Not sure your bathroom will always need that overhead lighting? Make sure it is on a dimmer so that you are always in control.

By lighting your bathroom from different heights, you’ll create layers of light that are perfect for this type of space. When it comes to your bathroom, it is better to have the option of always adding more light than not having enough. You’ll be thankful for your layers of light next time you are trying to get ready in the dark during an early winter morning.

What Type of Lighting is Best for a Half-Bath?

Bathroom Lighting

The bathroom is one of the most difficult rooms to light. Bathrooms tend to be smaller than most other rooms in the home, sometimes awkward in shape, and often times cluttered with mirrors, cabinets and storage. We are here to discuss how to properly and efficiently light your small half-bathroom by providing three simple options, which can be mixed and matched to create the perfect end result for your small half-bath.

1. Vanity Lighting – Vanity lighting is something that can work well in just about every bathroom. Because vanity lighting is designed specifically for bathrooms, it uses very little space and provides ample lighting. Just be sure you keep your mirror and vanity lighting proportional with one another.

2. Sconces – Sconces are a great option for small bathrooms that have a single sink, as they can be installed on either side of the mirror to produce a well-balanced lighting look. Sconces come in all shapes, sizes and styles which allow you to get exactly what you want. If you want your bathroom to be bright, choose a sconce that has a thin and/or light shade. Want your bathroom to be a tad dimmer? Simply choose a sconce with a darker shade.

3. Overhead Lighting – Overhead lighting is always a great option for small spaces because it takes up absolutely no surface or wall space. Overhead lighting or chandeliers are installed into the ceiling and produces ample lighting without taking up any of your valuable space. Other lighting options may be visually daunting in small spaces, but overhead lighting brings your eye up, making the space seem bigger than it actually is.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match the different options with one another. For instance, recessed lighting with sconces will add even more drama, light and design to your half-bath, if space permits. Vanity lighting, sconces and overhead lighting are your three best options when it comes to lighting a small half-bath.

Foyer Lighting 101

The Foyer welcomes in your guests and sets a tone for the rest of your home. This area should not be overlooked when designing a lighting plan. If the foyer is a smaller area, a chandelier or a few wall sconces can provide enough light to make the transition from the outdoors into the home. If it is a larger area, incorporate recessed or track fixtures for instant drama. To add more lighting, you can display lamps on side tables or a buffet, columns can be flanked by torchieres, art on the walls can be lit and plants can be highlighted with portable up lights. If there is a closet in your foyer, add a fixture to the closet to be sure there is enough light to see into it.

How high do I hang the chandelier in my foyer?

The bottom of the chandelier should be at least 8 feet above the floor. If the ceiling is very high, the chandelier may be hung higher than 8 feet. If there is a window above the front door through which the chandelier will be seen from the outside, the chandelier should be hung centered in relation to the window.

What size chandelier do I hang in the foyer?

The size of a chandelier should be chosen based on the width of the foyer, the ceiling height and any architectural details, such as double doors, or a window above the front door. A general rule is the chandelier width should be at least the same size in inches as the diagonal measurement of the room in feet. Example: If the room is 20 feet on the diagonal, then your chandelier should be about 20 inches long.
